A Nail-Biter in S.C. Yields No Surprises

South Carolina is behind us and on to Florida where the GOP is currently trending a 4-way tie in the polls. Although McCain edged out Mike Huckabee last night, Huckabee had solid results and his 5 delegate capture bolsters him to second in the delegate count, 5 ahead of John McCain and 21 behind Mitt Romney. The delegate count at this juncture demonstrates that currently we are in a three-way, possibly four-way battle, for the GOP nomination.
There are two questions on the slate today. First, will Fred Thompson is enough of a gentleman to step aside- after a lackluster performance in what was to be his strongest state yet, or if he will play the slimy party politics and stay in the race simply to take votes from Mike Huckabee. Personally, I think the party bosses have wanted him in as the spoiler, but those days have got to come to an end for the sake of the party. Secondly, has Rudy’s strategy worked or has it transformed a real candidate into a has-been? By not campaigning in the other caucuses, he hasn’t been mentioned, but he has also avoided much of the scrutiny that the other candidates have faced. It will also be interesting to see if Mitt Romney starts putting out smear ads against Rudy now that Rudy is involved in a caucus and is a threat to Romney. The GOP environment is at dew point in terms of the race. It can’t handle a four-way race.
