Light Up Night
Posted on 21. Nov, 2008 by Jenn in Pittsburgh
Tonight is light Up Night in Pittsburgh. For the non-'burghers among us, it is when Pittsburgh kicks off the holiday season and unveils its major decorations including the Macy's windows, the skating rink and tree at PPG Place, the Pittsburgh Creche, and is capped off with a Zambelli Fireworks show at 9:00 PM. We are supposed to get some lake effect snow showers to highlight the evening.

A note of interest: The Pittsburgh Creche was originally displayed at the Allegheny County Courthouse. In the 1989 County of Allegheny v. ACLU Greater Pittsburgh Chapter case, a mixed decision ruled that the display of the creche on government property was unconstitutional because it insinuated a government endorsement of Christianity. The creche now has a permanent home down the street (Grant Street) on privately owned property at the site of the U.S Steel Building. The Pittsburgh Creche is the world's only authorized replica of the creche that stands in front of Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome.

If you see the Macy’s windows, let me know if they’re worth looking at. Last time we went we were really disappointed.

I probably won’t even try to see them tonight. I didn’t think last year’s were that great, either, but I really enjoyed the year before, “Yes, Virginia, there really is a Santa Claus.”
