One of things I was most anticipating for our trip was the chance to see storms roll in because in Pittsburgh, a storm is often right on top of you before you see it coming due to the hills. I had opportunities it seemed nearly every day to see distant storms grow closer, but perhaps the more memorable storm struck during our first afternoon at Zion National Park. At first, I thought I might have the chance to catch lightning over my favorite rock at Zion, The Watchman. I didn’t get that shot, but I did catch several other shots. Over an inch of rain fell in a half an hour and the winds blew the rain horizontal at times.
Flash flooding is one of many dangers in Utah, especially in slot canyons. Many hikers were in the numerous slot canyons in Zion the day of the big storm and three men required rescuing by helicopter after being washed over a 40 foot waterfall in a canyon. Thankfully, though they sustained injuries, the men were OK.
