This is 9/30/12 and I wonder if there is any snow on the mts., behind Maroon Bells. I am in Beaverton, Or., by Portland…and I’ve always wanted to photography Maroon bells in the fall. I was wondering if you could advise me it looks like you were there in the first week of Sept… and those are deep, beautiful colors..

    thanks for helping me!

By the way somewhere around that area is or was a old mill, that you best got their by the tour, 4-wheel drive, do you know the name of that mill?

    Marilyn,

Thanks for stopping by the blog. This was shot in 2011. I was just at Maroon Bells last Thursday (09/28/2012) and the folliage was not nearly as nice this year and the leaves were already past peak. The combination of the drought and and early fall left the bells not so great this year. However, there was snow on the peaks this year! The down side was that the bells were shrouded in fog and clouds most of the time during my visit. I will post a recent photo on the blog soon, so stop back. I am still catching up from my whirlwind trip.

If you want to plan a trip for 2013 I would recommend trying to be in the area for a few days – there is plenty of stuff to photograph nearby and I would recommend the week of the 25th of September – give or take a few days. Also, the best foliage in Colorado can generally be found in the San Juan Mountains, in my opinion. Get your hands on Photographing the Southwest Colorado edition by Laurent Mantres and read it well. His advice is great for first time travellers to the Southwest. Let me know if you go – perhaps we can meet up!
