Historically, I’ve always been a “news and short articles” kind of reader. Audiobooks usually just put me to sleep! But this year, with the help of my friend Betsy—an avid reader and former children’s librarian—I decided to give them another shot.

I learned that a great story paired with the right narrator can make the miles fly by. I have officially been converted. And when you are boondocking, listening to a book on your phone takes a lot less battery power than the inverter, Starlink, and TV!

I used a combination of the Libby (library loans), Spotify Premium, which now includes 15 hours of audio books per month, and Audible. All three integrate into Android Auto while I drive, so I can be handsfree.

Here is a look at some of the books that kept me company on the road (and at camp) this year:

  • Wait Till Next Year by Doris Kearns Goodwin
  • News of the World by Paulette Jiles
  • The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles
  • Horse by Geraldine Brooks
  • Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
  • Destiny of the Republic by Candice Millard
  • The Phoenix Project by Gene Kim
  • Isaac’s Storm by Erik Larson
  • All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot
  • All Things Bright and Beautiful by James Herriot
  • Grandma Gatewood’s Walk by Ben Montgomery

I have them compiled on an Amazon list for your convenience. As an Amazon affiliate I earn from qualifying purchases.
