Freedom Over Fear
I’ve worked remotely for most of my career, but my 2015 TAB 320 offered a new kind of freedom—a way to escape my sticks-and-bricks house for good.
You see, I’m a photographer. My dream was to live in the landscapes I shoot. Chasing the right light can take weeks, and I wanted to do it from the Rocky Mountains, not on a quick vacation.
The catch? In short, I had a lot to learn. Connectivity, water, safety, and of course, the big one: power.
I had zero interest in learning about solar because I hate math. However, my dream was bigger than my distaste for the technical stuff, so I forced myself to learn. As a result, I built a spreadsheet to model my power usage, solar yield, and battery’s state of charge. This meant planning my usage and actively monitoring my state of charge with a Victron SmartShunt. Ultimately, that nerdy spreadsheet, plus real-time data, was the key.

The #1 Worry for Off-Grid Campers
Ever stared at a light switch, wondering if it’ll be the one that kills your battery? If so, you’re not alone. In fact, figuring out how long a battery really lasts is a huge struggle for RV owners. It’s the math anxiety that ruins the fun.
Luckily, modern tech helps. Lithium batteries, for example, offer more peace of mind than old lead-acid ones. They give you consistent power and you can use more of their stored energy without damaging them. Consequently, you get more usable power and less risk of wrecking an expensive battery.
Of course, if this has you thinking about an upgrade, you don’t have to go it alone. Interested in converting to lithium, upgrading your current lithium capacity, or adding solar? The nuCamp Service Center can help you.
Take the Guesswork Out of Your Power Usage
Worrying is exhausting, while planning is empowering. That’s why I refined my clunky spreadsheet into a user-friendly tool to help you do just that.
The TAB Power Calculator models your exact power usage. For instance, you add your appliances and daily habits, and it turns that abstract fear into hard data. This allows you to plan your trips with confidence, knowing you have the power you need.
Pro Tips for Managing Your Power
Here are a few key strategies for managing your power system to stay off-grid longer.
- First, Respect Your Solar Yield To begin with, your solar panels aren’t magic. Their output changes constantly. Key factors are time of year (winter sun is weak), location (latitude matters), and weather. Even passing clouds cause a big dip in power. Therefore, check the forecast, be realistic on cloudy days, and re-aim your panels toward the sun whenever you can.
- Next, Help Your Fridge Be Efficient Your fridge is a major power hog. As a result, the harder it works, the more battery it drains. Before you even leave, pre-cool it at home on shore power. Then, when you park, keep the fridge side of your rig in the shade, especially in the afternoon. Above all, stop opening the door so much. Every time you do, cold air escapes and your battery pays the price.
- Finally, Learn to Read Your Battery Monitor Your battery monitor (like the VictronConnect app) is your most important tool. However, don’t just look at the “fuel gauge”—learn the data. For example, watch the Current (A) number. Negative means you’re using power, while positive means you’re charging. Flip on a light and watch the number change. In short, this gives you a real feel for your power usage and puts you in control.
In the end, learning to camp off-grid is a journey from anxiety to freedom. It’s knowing you can be self-sufficient anywhere. So, stop guessing. Start planning. You’ve got this.
